To be square, or not to be square? Creating pattern with tiles

All these posts about pattern have got me thinking about new tiles, especially for the kitchen splashback, which is currently fashioned from emerald green tiles (surprisingly, the Colour for 2013 according to Pantone), including some embossed with herbs and vegetables…..

Fired Earth are the go-to place for decorative tiles that look fresh and modern, yet would also suit a rural kitchen:

I’m thinking of creating pattern in this space by choosing plain tiles with unusual shapes, such as these Marrakech Bahia tiles. Their muted, cool tones also appeal:

Or these fan shaped Paris Cabaret tiles, in this mix of blues, make for a fabulous wall pattern:

For traditional square tiles, this sophisticated blue and white Marrakech design comes in a choice of subtle patterns which look great mixed and matched: a fab way to introduce pattern without looking too unconventional….

Whilst these highly patterned Andalucia tiles will transport any bathroom wall to sunny Spain….

The other tile shop that’s a must-visit is The Reclaimed Tile Company, who source reclaimed vintage tiles and antique terracotta from across Europe. Their beautiful, colourful ‘Tapas’ tile combinations are perfect for those of us who can’t decide on one pattern. A bathroom or sun room floor would look heavenly tiled in one of their mixes:

For those who prefer a more organised approach to tiling, they have hundreds of reclaimed patterned tiles to choose from.

And of course, there’s always scope for simple, chic white, as seen in these Fired Earth washrooms….

Earth houses in Burkina Faso

A quick, visual post, sharing pictures of these inherently, necessarily practical; beautifully and intricately decorated earth houses in Burkina Faso:

Made from a mix of clay, soil, straw and cow dung, the mortar is layered to create walls thick enough to withstand both extreme heat and rain. What’s so immediately attractive are the intricate patterns: painted onto the walls with coloured mud and chalk, these give each hand-crafted house a unique character.

Rockett St George

February is underway – thank goodness – and with what a great start: the fabulous interiors emporium Rockett St George have listed Find the Details as the blog to watch on their Hot List for this month.

A huge thank you! to the team there: and a big hello to everyone who has discovered this site through Rockett St George: I hope you enjoy what you find; do get in touch with any comments or ideas for future pages.

What was so touching about being featured, is that Rockett chose to feature Find the Details purely because they liked the content: I haven’t, till now, included any of their products. So not before time, and also on the off chance that any of you haven’t discovered them, here’s a quick glimpse of my favourite pieces now at Rockett St George this spring….

Owner Jane has a magpie-eye for interesting, quirky finds – right up my street…. Her stock can’t be labelled with one particular look: instead you’ll find an eclectic and well-thought-out mix of well designed pieces, varying in style from industrial to glamorous, practical to whimsical, with ideas for every room in the house.

This large-scale station-style wall clock is perfect for kitchen walls…

If you live in a more child-free environment than I do, these freestanding cubes are perfect, grouped together to form a simple display area.  They would also work well as chic, simple  storage / display in a teenager’s room.

This lamp is a perfect example of the quirky finds at RSG: the lamp base is made from a silvered vintage soda bottle, and comes with a grey black shade: each piece is a one-off: a beautiful find.

On the right, Mr Perswall wall murals can be made to fit any wall space: I love this Library design, with its cheerful rainbow shades.
