Autumn details

It’s that time of year again here in rural England, when dark evenings and often gloomy days call for indoor spaces to be illuminated by layers of lighting. The hallway needed some TLC, though I’d written about it before (here), the redecoration stalled as life and a lack of ££ got in my way. But now, what was an unloved corner bang opposite the front door, filled with discarded boots and battered bags (first impressions – not good!), has had an injection of colour, texture and light:

It’s warmer and more welcoming in the evening…

…whilst in the daytime, even the cats tolerate the new arrangement….

For a hall-sized console table, this metal table from Cox & Cox is pretty perfect: slim enough to be out of the way, yet elegant and understated; it also kindly masks the boring (but increasingly necessary) radiator from view. And as ever, clever BHS comes up trumps with low level lighting solutions.

My go-to finishing details right now are geometric, textured ceramic vases in interesting shapes, fashionable colours and a cluster of different sizes: head to the wonderful Graham & Green, Rockett St George and Rigby & Mac for a tempting seletion on each site.

Next up, I’m coveting these autumnal Broste Copenhagen vessels from Rigby & Mac, with their informal, two-tone drip dry paint finish.

Enjoy the beautiful autumn colours outdoors; and happy vase shopping, if like me, you’re that way inclined! Jx

Sneak peak: John Lewis Spring/Summer 2014

Take a break from silver, glitter and sparkles this pre-Christmas week and mellow out with a sneak look at the beautiful press shots from John Lewis’s spring summer collection for 2014. There are two key trends; Expressions, which combines materials (wood, upholstery fabrics, wallpapers) in warm, detailed and textured neutral shades with others (glass, metallics, soft furnishings) chosen in flashes of contrasting brights: orange-hued copper (copper is definitely having its moment), citrus yellow; warm rose; rich purples and blues:

The Brushstrokes wallpaper is a particular favourite; new for this season; shown here in Smoke colourway, the pattern is also available as an upholstery/drape fabric. The painterly Expressions framed prints are part of the new range; styled here alongside Content by Conran side tables (they come as a nest of three for £199), and a Heming sofa in Porto Grey.

Christmas shopping sorted in clicks: the best websites, Pt1: Cox & Cox

If, like me, you have to shop for Christmas gifts with your nose near a screen rather than your feet moving on concrete, then we’re lucky – we can make the most of the best online retailers who’ve done the hard work for us. These are the sites that have buyers/owners with eagle eyes that disregard piles of mass-produced tat at trade fairs, instead winkling out the unusual, covetable and interesting, sourcing products made with care and design flair, perfect for giving and receiving. Some have physical shops and others, such as Cox & Cox, are purely online.

One of my favourite places to shop, Cox & Cox offer beautiful homewares, furniture and decorative details that, thankfully, can be used on a daily basis. Searching for gifts that are perfect for home-lovers, you’ll find decorative details that lend a touch of understated luxury to rooms, and at Christmas, many gifts can be put to work, adding festive glamour to the Christmas table and surrounding room:

Gifts for gardeners and cooks are covered; such as the the zinc planters, above, and the cream tableware, below, which looks almost too good for everyday use:

Casa earthenware, from £45 for a set of four side plates, Cox & Cox

And whilst this metal console table is probably too large for a gift, I’d be delighted if someone were to give it to me… alongside the rug, lanterns, mirror…..

The best elements are decorative, detailed and patterned, as seen below, from the ornate metal ceiling light to the bed, with its deep buttoned headboard upholstered in tactile, neutral fabric. Aria: contemporary, design-led homewares for 2013

A recent desire to revisit of one of my favourite parts of London, Islington: now an interiors shopper’s paradise, but for me, years ago was simply home: somewhere I lived and played as a small child. A little fun with filters on these images, and the shot of the Mini (shame it’s not an original model) plus the communal London square (empty here but filled with children when school is over) brings the memories back…. If I were to display these shots at home, they’d have to slot into a perspex photo cube: (Remember them? No? Click the link! Hilariously retro) they were perfect for helping your photos fade happily together….

Nostalgia over, let’s go back with a bang to stylish 2013 with a focus on Aria. Set in an atmospheric hall in Islington, Aria has recently overhauled their website so you can shop their interesting mix of classic, contemporary, design-led homewares wherever you live.

The high ceilings of Barnsbury Hall provide a stimulating backdrop for their mix of furniture, lighting, ceramics and tableware…..

Expect to find design classics alongside work from young, super-talented up-and-coming designers: I I love these geometric patterned cushions by the highly regarded designer Tamasyn Gambell:

Whilst their own Aria Selection range includes contemporary pieces, such as this Embrace coffee table / storage:

Embrace Table 2

As well as smaller pieces: this French-made Aria Selection china, with its simple dip-dye pattern and block colours, is right on trend:
